No trip to Cambodia is complete without visiting the legendary Angkor Wat, one of the largest religious monuments in the world. As I approached the temple complex at dawn, it’s hard to describe just how awe-inspiring it is to stand in front of this architectural marvel, with its intricate carvings depicting scenes from Hindu mythology.
What struck me most was the sense of peace and spirituality that permeates the entire site. While Angkor Wat itself is the most famous temple, the surrounding Angkor Archaeological Park holds countless other treasures, each with its own story to tell. From the hauntingly beautiful Bayon Temple, with its smiling faces, to the overgrown Ta Prohm, where nature has reclaimed the stone structures, every corner of Angkor feels like stepping back in time.
The Vibrant Streets of Phnom Penh
After immersing myself in Cambodia’s ancient history, I made my way to Phnom Penh, the bustling capital city. Phnom Penh is a dynamic blend of old-world charm and modern vibrancy. I spent hours wandering the lively streets, where French colonial architecture stands proudly beside sleek skyscrapers. One of the highlights of Phnom Penh is the Royal Palace, a stunning complex of buildings that serve as the official residence of the King of Cambodia. The intricate details of the silver pagoda and the beautifully manicured gardens left me in awe. Nearby, I visited the National Museum of Cambodia, where I had the chance to learn more about the country’s rich cultural heritage.
However, no trip to Phnom Penh would be complete without paying a visit to the Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. These sobering sites are a reminder of Cambodia’s painful history during the Khmer Rouge regime. It was a deeply emotional experience, but I believe it’s important to honour the memory of the victims and reflect on the resilience of the Cambodian people.
Cultural Immersion in Siem Reap
While Siem Reap is best known for being the gateway to Angkor Wat, it’s also a city brimming with life and culture. During my stay, I had the chance to explore local markets, sample delicious Khmer cuisine, and meet the friendly people who call this city home. One of the highlights was visiting a traditional village where I had the opportunity to try my hand at cooking one of the local dishes, Fish Amok—a fragrant, coconut milk-based curry served in a banana leaf. The local artisans in Siem Reap are incredibly talented, and I couldn’t resist picking up some handcrafted souvenirs. From intricate silver jewellery to handwoven textiles, there’s no shortage of beautiful pieces to take home as a reminder of this magical country.

Cambodia may have a complex and sometimes painful history, but it is also a place of immense beauty, strength, and hope. My journey here allowed me the opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with a culture that is rich in history and brimming with life.
