Xin chào, friends! If you’ve been following my travels, you know I’m always on the hunt for vibrant cultures, delicious food, and unforgettable adventures. Well, my recent trip to Vietnam ticked all the boxes and more. From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the energy of Ho Chi Minh City , every corner of this beautiful country had something unique to offer. Let me take you through my journey from north to south and share the highlights of my incredible Vietnam adventure!
Hanoi: The Heart of Vietnam
My trip started in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and a city that effortlessly combines ancient traditions with modern-day vibrancy. Walking through the old quarter felt like stepping into a living history book, and the energy was a buzz!
What to Do in Hanoi:
1. Explore the Old Quarter:
The Old Quarter is the beating heart of Hanoi. With its narrow streets, colonial-era buildings, and bustling markets, it’s a place you can spend hours exploring. I loved wandering through the maze of streets, each one specialising in different goods like silk, spices, and street food. Don’t miss Hoan Kiem Lake—a beautiful spot to unwind and watch the locals practice Tai Chi at sunrise.
2. Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum:
A trip to Hanoi wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, where the revered leader of Vietnam is preserved. It’s a sobering and awe-inspiring experience to pay respects to such an important figure in the country’s history. While you’re in the area, also visit the nearby Presidential Palace and One Pillar Pagoda.
3. Street Food Heaven:
One of the highlights of my time in Hanoi was the street food. From Pho (Vietnam’s iconic noodle soup, pronounced “fur”) to Bánh Mì (Vietnamese sandwiches), the food in Hanoi is an absolute must-try. I had a blast joining a street food tour where I got to sample local delicacies like egg coffee (yes, it’s a thing, and it’s delicious!) and Bánh Cuốn (steamed rice rolls). Trust me, you haven’t experienced Hanoi until you’ve tasted its street food!
4. Visit the Temple of Literature:
The Temple of Literature is a peaceful oasis in the heart of Hanoi and an important cultural site dedicated to Confucius and Vietnam’s first university. The tranquil gardens and beautiful architecture made for a serene escape from the city’s hustle.
Halong Bay: A Natural Wonder
After a few days in bustling Hanoi, I took a short trip to one of Vietnam’s most famous landmarks—Halong Bay. Known for its emerald waters and towering limestone karsts, Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-visit destination.
What to Do in Halong Bay:
1. Cruise the Bay:
I boarded a traditional junk boat for an overnight cruise around Halong Bay, and the views were absolutely surreal. We sailed past towering limestone islands, explored caves, and swam in the clear waters. If you’re into adventure, there’s also kayaking and rock climbing to try!
2. Visit Cat Ba Island:
I also spent a day on Cat Ba Island, which is part of Halong Bay and offers some stunning beaches and hiking opportunities. The island’s Cat Ba National Park has some amazing trails with breathtaking views of the bay.
Hue: The Imperial City
Next, I made my way south to Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, known for its grand architecture, historic sites, and peaceful vibe. Hue offers a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s royal past.
What to Do in Hue:
1. Imperial City:
The Imperial City in Hue is a must-see. This UNESCO-listed site is a huge complex of palaces, temples, and gates that was once home to the Nguyen emperors. Walking through the ancient walls, I couldn’t help but marvel at the intricate design and the stories that the place holds.
2. Tombs of the Emperors:
The Emperor Tombs along the Perfume River are a highlight in Hue. These magnificent tombs were built for past emperors and are a mix of grand architecture and stunning landscapes. I visited Tomb of Khai Dinh and Tomb of Tu Duc, both of which were absolutely breath taking!
Ho Chi Minh City: The Bustling Southern Charm
Finally, I made it to Ho Chi Minh City, the dynamic economic hub of Vietnam. From modern skyscrapers to historical landmarks, this city is a perfect blend of old and new. The pace is fast, the energy is high, and there’s so much to do!
What to Do in Ho Chi Minh City:
1. Visit the War Remnants Museum:
A visit to the War Remnants Museum is essential to understand Vietnam’s recent history. The exhibits are both moving and educational, giving insight into the impact of the Vietnam War on the country.
2. Explore Ben Thanh Market:
Ben Thanh Market is the place to be for shopping in Ho Chi Minh City. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, local goods, or fresh produce, this market has it all. It’s a great place to experience the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City while picking up a few items to take home!
3. The Notre-Dame Cathedral & Central Post Office:
For a taste of French colonial architecture, head to the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Central Post Office. These landmarks are iconic to the city and offer beautiful photo opportunities.
4. Rooftop Bars and Food:
One of my favorite things to do in Ho Chi Minh City was to enjoy the incredible food scene. From local Vietnamese dishes to international cuisine, the options are endless. Don’t miss the opportunity to sip cocktails at a rooftop bar like Bitexco Tower for stunning views of the city skyline.
Final Thoughts:
Vietnam is a country that captures your heart and senses at every turn. From the ancient charm of Hanoi to the imperial history of Hue, and the electric energy of Ho Chi Minh City, this journey had it all. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or an adventure seeker, Vietnam will not disappoint. I left with my heart full and my camera roll overflowing, and I can’t wait to return to explore even more of this incredible country!

Vietnam can get quite hot and humid, so make sure to pack light and breathable clothing. Also, bring comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of walking, especially in the bustling cities!
